I photographed Stephen in my studio back in February. Beautiful gentle man. The interiors were made in his consulting room in Hampstead the same week. He is an acclaimed author and psychoanalyst whose first book ‘The Examined Life’ has been translated into over 25 languages.
His second book ‘Loves Labour’, published by @randomhouse explores one of the central questions of our lives: How do we find and keep love?
As a married man of 6 months (after an almost 20 year courtship and a 17 year old daughter together) reading it had a deep resonance in regards to the joy and pain of my own long term relationships as a partner and a father. A really enjoyable and thought provoking read and I highly recommended it.
The book has an incredible cover featuring a work by Sarah Jones and fantastic author portrait by Bettina von Zwehl both of whom I have great admiration for as artists.
I include below an observation Stephen was kind enough to make about our studio session together.
‘There is something painterly in his attention to colour, light and composition — it felt less like a conventional shoot and more like a considered piece of work unfolding. (I want to say; it was like being in a painting as it was being painted.)’ Stephen Grosz
