_____________

In The Art of Loving, Erich Fromm argued that human beings carry a deep anxiety rooted in separateness—the sense of being isolated, cut off, or alone in the world. To ease this existential discomfort, cultures throughout history have turned to “orgiastic rituals”: intense collective experiences built on rhythm, movement, music, and emotional release. In these states, individuality dissolves, and participants feel momentarily fused with one another and with something larger than themselves. From a non-dual perspective, these experiences hint at the underlying reality that the separation between self and other is ultimately illusory. In the temporary suspension of ego boundaries during such rituals, participants glimpse a mode of consciousness in which the dualities of self and world, inner and outer, vanish.
